Harm Reduction Program in Montenegro

Within realization of the project “Support to Implementation of National Strategy for fight against AIDS in Montenegro” supported by The Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria and UNDP Office in Montenegro, CAZAS is conducting the project “Harm Reduction Program among Intravenous Drug Users (IDUs)”. Project is based on is based on two segments: 1) outreach work with IDUs and substitution of contaminated needles and syringes for sterile ones, which are distributed through this program among IDUs, and 2) substitution methadone treatment in Primary Health Care Center Podgorica.

CAZAS conducted Campaign on the occasion of 1 December, World AIDS Day. The campaign was organized on national level. The main barrier of the campaign was National AIDS Commission and CAZAS is part of it. Partners on the campaign were Institute for Public health, Infective clinic in Podgorica, Primary health care center Podgorica, and NGOs Juventas and Monte Vita from Bijelo Polje, Zastita from Bar and Red cross Montenegro. Organized training of trainers

In the period from 29th August – 2nd September 2007 in Ivanova Korita was held Training of trainers for the most at risk adolescents (MARA Population). There were 20 young people who participated at the training and they were from 6 towns in Montenegro, from Podgorica, Niksic, Bar, Kotor, Tivat and Bijelo Polje.
The aim of this training is to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention among extremely vulnerable groups. These 20 young people who acquired the title of the Trainer are going to hold the workshops for their peers in the schools.

This year in the school participated 50 educators, divided into two groups. Beside educators of Montenegrin association against AIDS-CAZAS, at the school also took part educators from Juventas who are our partners at this project.

Advanced training for peer educators

Within the project Peer to Peer without a Fear in the period from 17th-20th June will be held seminar in Ivanova Korita. The participant at the seminar will be educators of CAZAS and Juventas who are partners in implementation of this seminar.
At the seminar through the program of peer education and through interactive education and workshops the participants will have opportunity to improve their skills necessary for their future work with youth. At the seminar there will be 50 participants who will be divided in two groups by 25 participants.

May 18th is HIV Vaccine Awareness Day (HVAD). This annual observance is a day to recognize and thank the thousands of volunteers, community members, health professionals, and scientists who are working together to find a safe and effective HIV vaccine. It is also a day to educate our communities about the importance of preventive HIV vaccine research.
In recognition of HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, community activities and media events are being held around the country.

In Montenegro will be organized International AIDS Candlelight Memorial for the 2nd time.
This year, the Candlelight Memorial will be organized on Sunday 20th May 2007 in Podgorica, Bar and Bijelo Polje, between 6-9 pm. The gathered activities, representatives of NGOs as well the other people interested in, on this occasion would give honor to the people died from AIDS by light a candle and also give their contribution to this event. Access to HIV therapy grew significantly in 2006, but significant obstacles remain to approaching universal access to HIV services.
More than two million people in low- and middle-income countries now receive HIV therapy; Efforts must increase significantly to increase access to HIV treatment and prevention.
Access to antiretroviral therapy for advanced HIV infection in low- and middle-income countries continued to grow throughout 2006, with more than two million people living with HIV/AIDS receiving treatment in December 2006, a 54% increase over the 1.3 million people on treatment one year earlier in these countries.
These encouraging findings were released today in a new report, “Towards universal access: scaling up priority HIV/AIDS interventions in the health sector,” published by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and UNICEF.
