Epidemiology of HIV / AIDS in Montenegro

In Montenegro since first case from 1989 till the end of 2005 have been registered 65 cases of HIV/AIDS, of which 25 persons died. Now there are registered 11 AIDS cases and 19 persons infected with HIV. According to World Health Organization (WHO) it is estimated that the number of infected people in Montenegro is at least 10-15 times bigger and that it is approximately between 500 and 800 cases.

In 13 of 21 municipalities in Montenegro from 1989, there were or there are infected people living with HIV/AIDS, with the biggest number in Podgorica and municipalities on the seaside. In Podgorica is the biggest number of people living with HIV/AIDS (30%), then on the coast (47%) and the least in cities of central and northern region. In 2005 was registered 9 newly infected persons of which one person with AIDS. During this year one person died of AIDS.

In relation to the number of registered persons, as so called high-at-risk groups are identified men having sex with men (MSM) with 20%, sailors (15%) and tourist workers (13%).

Proportion of HIV/AIDS among men and women since the beginning of epidemic is 3:1.

Almost 95% of registered persons is aged from 20–45.
