AIDS treatments are long lasting and very expensive. We have to say clearly that AIDS cannot be cured, but only treated so that life of HIV positive or AIDS diseased people can be extended by therapy. Between 80-90% of AIDS diseased people dies in period of 3-5 years, even though medicaments can prolong life for few years.

Although medicaments for AIDS still do not exist, there are a lot of medicaments that are used to fight against AIDS. That are: zivovudine (known as AZT), didanozin, zalcitabin, lamivudin and stavudin.

AZT is medicament, which doctors usually use at the beginning of treating person with symptoms. Also, it is medicament chosen for prevention of developing disease at HIV positive persons.

New medicaments, called protease inhibitors (ex. indinovir), are proven to be very successful for virus reduction in blood for longer periods of time. Scientists are still searching for medicament that will cure AIDS. First time after beginning of AIDS epidemic, in 1996. registered number of new-discovered patients was reduced. It is mainly result of development and wide use of these strong medicaments.

Therapy that uses three medicaments, called Highly Active Retroviral Therapy, helps people to live longer than before. This therapy is that strong that it can reduce HIV infection to very low level and maintains same level longer than before. Reason for longer life of people who are HIV infected nowadays is the fact that doctors know how to use these medicaments for repression of secondary infection (opportunistic) before they even appear. This doesn't mean that treating HIV and AIDS is simple. On contrary, daily regime of using these medicaments can be very complicated and taking a lot of time, and it is important to say that their effect depends on strict following of regulations prescribed by doctors. It is not usual, but it can happen that those medicaments do not have effect. This can happen as consequence of resistance development of HIV-1, which can mutate in different forms on which medicaments do not have effect.

The best is to consult doctor about all these problems so that he could carefully follow patient and observe unexpected consequences. Some new medicaments and possibility of development ultimate AIDS medicament is in front of us. Nevertheless, the only way to stop infection is to avoid risk behavior.

Protection measures of opportunistic theory, as is Pneumocystis carinii (PCP) pneumonia are possible if certain medicaments are taken, which can prolong patient's life. A lot of medicaments are used in opportunistic infection treatment. Those are foskarnet i ganciklovir, which are used for citomegalovirusoid infection, then flukonazol for treating fungus infections, and trimetoprim-sulfometoksazol for PCP curing and prevention.

When CDT 4 lymphocyte fail under 200 because of PCP prevention, one of the most frequent and deadliest infections linked with HIV, adults are treated with trimetoprim-sulfometoksazol as addition to antiretroviral therapy.

Children are treated with PCP therapy only when the number of CDT 4 falls under normal for that age. Regardless of CD4 T lymphocytes number, HIV positive children and adults who survive are treated with PCP medicaments during all life, in order to prevent return of pneumonia.

HIV infected persons that develop Caposhy sarcoma or some other cancer, are treated with radiotherapy, chemotherapy or alpha interferon injections. Emotional stress caused by this disease can be reduced if person join support groups, where people involved have similar problems.
